System Management

Remote Connectivity:
We are remotely connected, 24*7 to every server we manage. We do this with very secure VPN links coming from DMZ's in multiple co-location facilities that we lease. We have excellent network connections and multiple paths to each server. We always connect to a network port, and an out of band lights out management port.
Having this connectivity allows us to fully monitor the server/equipment 24*7 and resolve over 99% of all issues. Hardware vendors will usually dispatch their own technicians for a serious hardware issue and we can walk them through the parts replacement, otherwise we will be on site.
Monitoring:
Monitoring systems is a big part of what GNS does and we use a number of different technologies. We utilize SNMP, as well as the open source Nagios package. We like Nagios because it allows us to easily write our own custom checks, to perform very specific checks that our clients need.
Expert Information Systems:
At GNS, we've built up a huge information database listing all the information for all the equipment for each customer, along with the access information required to get to the heart of any issue. Every one of our technicians has access to this and they are all kept up to date work-in-progress, so any of them will know enough to work on the issue. If they need additional help, they can call on other members of the team as required.
Our database is a "smart" system. It is automatically updated from a variety of sources and, actually, forms a core part of our automated system monitoring system.
